Waste management and Recycling Programme

Maru received funding from the National Lotteries commission for a Waste Management and Recycling Program which focused on:

• Enterprise development
• Street Sweeping
• Education and awareness raising
• River Cleaning
• Tree Planting
• Clearing of illegal dumpsites

The program trained and employed 48 Environmental Ambassadors who worked in 8 wards in the City of Johannesburg. 578 streets were cleaned and 27241 households were impacted by these clean ups. Maru also cleaned the Kaalspruit river and cleared all illegal dumping sites that are close to the river. Maru was awarded a certificate of Excellence in recognition of our efforts in raising environmental consciousness and keeping the City of Johannesburg clean.
